In Japan, many people gradually started to play or return to genshin after v2.0, this is one of the reason yoimiya is doing fine in my opinion.
I don't have any source, but I'm Japanese, so I have watched Japanese Genshin community.
In Genshin's release day(almost a year ago), we had bad rumors about this game because it's released by Chinese company. Of cource those were all misinformation. So, I think GI lost possible players for this, those who don't care started to play it though.
However, in SNS, people (including famous youtubers) had talked about GI's good game experience like gameplay, character, story, famous voice actors, etc. So, GI gradually got attention from those who haven't play it.
Then, v2.0 update was a big opportunity for them to start to play it because of Japanese themed country and summer vacation in real life. Perhaps, the number of players gradually increased after ayaka's release because real summer vacation for employees in Japan(those who drop money most) usually started 13th August.
I think that is the reason why yoimiya is slightly doing better than ayaka in Japan. Yoimiya's banner was boosted by beginners in my opinion(and those who returned). They just started to drop money after yoimiya's release. And those who already started playing it before v2.0 tend to skip yoimiya for baal. Of cource, some of them (like simp, whale, etc) rolled for yoimiya.
And, yes, in Japan, Wife＞＞＞＞Meta. Ayaka and yoimiya are both wife, so they just roll when they can roll. If someone talked about character's performance ingame like "A is weaker than B at this point", people definitely would say "nooooo, both are strong, ok?! Don't talk about that anymore!"
Some people surely understand the game system in detail like ICD, elemental mastery, or something like that. But, people in SNS and famous youtubers, streamers avoid to compare the character and talk about that because they don't want to see people fighting each other in their comment section. At last, everyone says "she(he) is so strong!" on every banner without testing. Some people discuss problems on characters, but get less attention.
